  • Scent Work

Scent work is a sport that requires the dog to locate a scent (essential oils) and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. Scent work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a fun and challenging way.

  • Rally Obedience

You and your dog navigate a course, side by side, as you guide him through a course of 10-20 different signs. Each of the signs provide instructions regarding the next skill to be performed. It’s all about working as a team while performing the skills, with the dog under control.

Action Agility also offers AKC Trick Dog as well as AKC Canine Good Citizen testing on a periodic basis. Watch the website and our Facebook page for more information on testing dates.

What to bring with you

Dog

A happy, healthy and hungry dog. Because we will be using food as motivators, it will be to your advantage if your dog is eager to eat. If you normally feed your dog in the evening, you may want to withhold its meal on class nights, or consider the food motivators that you will use in class as its evening feeding doled out in small bits.

Buckle Collar

Agility training is not about forcing our dogs into a particular behavior but learning how to communicate with body language and enthusiasm. A buckle collar should be sufficient to keep most dogs in your immediate control. Adjustments can be make on a case by case basis.

Leash

A six-foot leash with a loop at the handler end will come in handy for some of our Teamwork exercises and for hands-free training. At some point, you might want to purchase a short TAB leash as you start to work with your dog off leash.

Tug Toy

We will be spending a lot of time teaching our dogs how to play with us. In agility, we want our dogs to think that we are the most interesting thing around-not other dogs, equipment, etc. A ball on a string, knotted rope, or bungee tugs with pouch are some examples. Most pet stores have a good selection of tug toys. Clean run is a great online resource for all your agility needs.

Water

Bring water for you and your dog. Think of a class as going to the gym. You and your dog both need to stay well hydrated. Also bring a water dish for your dog as we discourage sharing of water bowls. Collapsible bowls are a great choice that can clip to your tote bag.

Treats

Bring something your dog loves, something smelly and mouthwatering. Leave the dry kibble at home. You can try hot dogs, cheese, liver treats, or meat bits. Depending on the size of your dog, the treats should be cut up into ONE BITE sizes. They should not be so big that your dog has to stop what it’s doing to chew on them, but they need to be large enough for your dog to get some satisfaction from the reinforcer. BRING LOTS! Don’t be stingy at this point. You can always take the extra home and use during the week as you do your homework.

Treat Bag

You will need some kind of bag from which you can swiftly and smoothly remove a treat. The bag should be secured to your body somehow, so that both hands are free to guide your dog. Treat bags are available at Target, PetSmart, and online for around $10.

Tote bag, backpack, duffle bag

A go bag to keep all of your training accessories together.
